Renowned Indonesian fashion designer Biyan Wanaatmadja presented a Studio 133 fashion show at The Dharmawangsa, South Jakarta, on Nov. 6. It featured the 2019 spring/summer collection of the label, the designer’s second line.

Founded in 1985, Studio 133 offers ready-to-wear collections based on modernized traditional attire. In a press conference prior to the show, the designer noted the line’s versatility, making it attractive to a younger market. The label is known for classic and sophisticated designs in silk, along with interpretations of traditional blouses such as kebaya (traditional blouse) or kaftan and cheongsam (traditional Chinese dress) adorned with embroidery and beads.

Studio 133’s 2019 SS collection is titled "Juxtaposition", a concept that came from the pairing, mixing and clashing of elements, materials and motifs. “There are feminine touches along with masculine, something traditional with modern twists, floral mixed with geometric patterns, as well as silk prints mashed with lace,” said Biyan.

The designer also incorporated motifs of Buketan batik found along the coastline of Java, as well as kilim (handwoven carpet) from the Middle East. The clothes are dominated by loose silhouettes, such as pajama-style blouses, pleated skirts, baby doll dresses and wide pants.

Earlier in May, Biyan started collaborating with e-commerce firm JD.ID. Studio 133’s collection has been available exclusively on the website, and the 2019 SS collection is no different. Practicing the see-now-buy-now concept, the new collection became available on JD.ID right after the show ended.

Stephanie Susilo, head of luxe and fashion at JD.ID, said the platform aimed to help customers that might find it difficult to shop for Studio 133 garments because of the locations of their stores. “Now, customers all over Indonesia can find the collection with just a click, along with added benefits such as the ability to pay in installments over 24 months,” she added.
